Oscar Observations
Here follows some comments on The Oscars:
A fairly good show. Not extremely memorable, but decent.
I felt good about the Best Actor/Actress and Best Picture decisions.
I definitely enjoyed Chris Rock's introductory monologue. 3 years ago, members of the Oscar audience booed Michael Moore for saying "Shame on you, Mr. Bush!" Today, Chris Rock gets hired for making fun of the American President. Interesting...
I especially enjoyed his comment that despite the incredible box office sales for Fahrenheit 9/11, the film did not receive a nomination for Best Documentary. Some may argue that Fahrenheit wasn't nominated because it has a bad opinion of President Bush. This is true...however, this was a political maneuver, not an aesthetic judgment of the film's qualities. Just because Fahrenheit has an aggressive opinion does not mean that the film should be ignored.
You will very rarely find a purely objective documentary. All documentaries are opinionated in some way, shape, or sort. For example, last night's winner Born into Brothels has an underlining argument against the prostitution of children by specific people. Supersize Me was created to delineate the specific harm in food made by McDonald's. Fahrenheit 9/11 was created to delineate the specific harm attributed to President Bush by Michael Moore.
